The Science of a Balanced Ecosystem
1. The Drainage Layer
A false bottom with gravel or leca prevents root rot by collecting excess water and creating humidity.
2. The Soil Layer
A specialized, nutrient-rich soil mix provides the essential foundation for plant growth and microbial life.
3. Evaporation & Condensation
Light creates warmth, causing water to evaporate from plants and soil. This moisture then condenses on the cooler glass surfaces.
4. Precipitation
As condensation builds, water droplets 'rain' back down to the soil, completing the continuous water cycle and sustaining the terrarium.
Caring For Your Closed Terrarium
Light Requirements
Place in a bright spot with indirect sunlight. Direct sun can cook the plants, causing irreparable damage.
Watering Needs
Very rarely! Look for condensation on the glass. If there's none for a few consecutive days, it might need a light misting.
Pruning & Maintenance
Occasionally trim back plants that grow too large or touch the glass excessively to maintain aesthetic and health.
Ensuring Plant Health
Periodically open the lid for an hour for air exchange. This helps prevent mold and keeps your living ecosystem thriving.
