Moss Terrarium Care

Easy Care Tips for Lasting Vibrancy

  • Light:

Keep your moss terrarium out of direct sunlight, which can quickly burn sensitive moss. Low to medium indirect light is ideal – think north-facing windows or a well-lit office corner.

  • Water:

Moss has no traditional roots, absorbing moisture from the air and its surroundings. Mist lightly every 2-4 weeks, or when the moss begins to look drier or a lighter shade of green. Always use distilled or rainwater to prevent mineral buildup and discoloration.

  • Ventilation:

For closed terrariums, it's beneficial to open the lid once a week for about an hour. This allows for fresh air circulation and helps prevent excessive humidity which can lead to mold issues.

Troubleshooting Your Moss Garden

Most often, browning moss is a sign of too much direct sunlight or the use of tap water, which contains chlorine and other minerals. Move to a shadier spot and switch to distilled water for misting.
Mold usually indicates excessive moisture and lack of air circulation. Open your terrarium lid for several hours or even a full day to allow it to dry out. Reduce misting frequency. You can gently remove small patches of mold with tweezers.
Ensure you're misting thoroughly enough to slightly dampen the moss without soaking the substrate. If your home humidity is very low, you might need to mist slightly more often or consider a terrarium with a tighter seal.
